We have a Windows 2003 domain, everyone has IE7 and Firefox on their
desktops. There are a few versions of Firefox, and I want to update everyone
to the latest - Firefox 3.6 via GP software install.

I saw one free product FrontMotion Firefox MSI - setup a GP, tried it on two
XP systems, it did upgrade but "update" options were taken off, in Firefox
-----

Tools/options/advanced/update tab ---- under automatically check for updates
to:

All options should be available to check on/off, by default all are on to be
checked for updates. All were taken off and grayed out after the upgrade with
the mentioned software.

If anyone used this software and can help (I posted on their site also with
no luck), or ------ you can recommend a way to get Mozilla Firefox out to
desktops via GP it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

Firefox disables these options when the current user doesn't have rights
to install/upgrade Firefox.

If you're maintaining Firefox using MSIs rather than relying on
individual installs then this isn't a problem.

Hi Dave,

This could cause a problem since I use the MSI's to upgrade "full" versions
- version 3.5, 3.6 and in the future 3.7. I really did not have plans on
using the MSI to roll out the latest update(s), which right now is 3.6.2,
next maybe 3.6.3.

Have you considered using the portable version, then just push it out as a
file copy?

This issue isn't specific to whether you use MSIs or EXE installer
methods to install/upgrade Firefox, but rather, it's due to the fact
that users don't have sufficient rights to upgrade Firefox at all.

There are basically three fixes, 1) give users administrative rights
(full "administrator" rights, or read/write access to the Firefox
installation directory -- Note that this is a massive security hole,
just give out full administrator rights), 2) install Firefox into
individual profiles instead of globally, 3) maintain/upgrade Firefox
administratively.

Honestly I'd go #3 across the board unless there is a compelling reason
to only major updates risking that users will run out of date versions
with known compromises.
