Hi,

I checked the Microsoft download site, and I found the ADM's for Office
2007, but I can't find any ADM's for Vista. Are there any?

The DC is Windows Server 2003 R2.

Thanks!

Hello Bob,

Vista does not longer use .adm files. Vista uses .admx or.adml files. You
have to adminitrate them from a vista or later machine.

Vista DOES still use .adm files. It will import them as part of the GPO (as
server 2003 does before the sysvol is modified for Vista- if you even modify
it). I am using several on an enterprise domain. Once you import the .adm,
it will be listed under classic administratirve templates. Remember to
change you filtering.

Also, the Office 2007 .adm's work fine with Vista. I am using them. Be
carefull if you use the Outlook 2007 adm, there is a typo that needs
corrected.

Change my filtering? The only filter I'm using is for the terminal services
GPO in that I don't apply it to Domain Admins.

Should I be using filtering now that I'm introducing Vista along with XP?

I was thinking of applying all the computer and user GPO's to all
(regardless if they are XP or Vista). I'm assuming if the GPO doesn't apply
to the OS, it will simply be ignored and no harm done.

Thanks for the help!

Bob.

Sorry, what I was thinking doesnt apply to the office templates, but to
custom templates you can write.

But for something to store for later use. What I meant by filtering was in
the GPMC, not security filtering.

In the GPMC you need to click on Administrative Templates, then
view/filtering and uncheck the box that says "only show policy settings that
can fully managed"

Now, on another note, it would be a best practice to use WMI filtering to
seperate your Vista and XP policies. Vista has different settings than XP,
for example the auditing and event logs are different, the same settings wont
apply to both, so you need different GPO's for them. I use WMI filtering and
it works great.

I'm a little confused by the links you have me.

This one:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=05d0598b-95f9-4bdd-af36-b365d68ec5f6&DisplayLang=en
Is for the "Administrative Templates (.admx) for Windows Vista" version 1
dated 9/21/07

However, this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929841
Tells me I should copy the PolicyDefinitions folder on the Windows
Vista-based computer over to my DC.

At first glance, I was thinking the first link has updated admx files from
the original ship, but the web page doesn't indicate that (especially when
it says it is version 1).

So, which should I use?

Thanks,

Bob.

The admx files on your computer and the ones you can download is the same.
But the downloadable package contains more languages if you would like to
have that...

I'm a bit confused.

I downloaded http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929841 and it came as an MSI?

I've always seen ADM's (including the the Office 2007 download) to come as
an EXE which extracts the ADM's (plus ADMX's in Office 2007) to a folder of
your choice.

Vista however comes packaged as an MSI and "installs" to "C:\Program Files
(x86)\Microsoft Group Policy\PolicyDefinitions". As no instructions came
with the download, I guessing I'm supposed to copy the entire folder
"PolicyDefinitions" to
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSVOL\sysvol\MyDomainController.local\Policies" . I guess
after this is done, I would uninstall the MSI as there is no reason for it
anymore?

But more importantly than that, the MSI did not come with the typical Excel
spreadsheet that explains what all the available GPO's are? Where is this
missing speadsheet?

Thanks!

Bob.

Sorry i create an ADRMS policy for some users from my ADRMS server on office 2007 usage right, the location that i directed it to store the policy template file is a shared folder on the domain controller. When i got to the domain controller to add the policy to the domain it was showing me an error "unexpected syntax in line 1 error 51, expected CLASS,CATEGORY, [string]". I also discovered that the file was saved with the xml file format how do i convert it to an .adm file
