Group Policy Template Won't Import
(too old to reply)

I am trying to import a group policy template via the GPMC console into
the group policy editor. I have attempted to import a custom-created
policy template and a standard template (High Security Member Baseline)
from the Windows Server 2003 Security Guide.

In both cases I get the error message "Windows cannot import invalid
template %template%". Replace %template% with the name of the template
in this case.

Anybody have any suggestions? I don't want to go installing the GPMC on
my servers to have to import from there...

Thanks,

Josh

It sounds like you are trying to import a security template. If that is the
case select edit of the Group Policy or security policy and go to computer
configuration/Windows settings/security settings. Right click security
settings and then select import policy and browse to your security template.
Make sure you test any security template thoroughly because often security
setting incompatibilities can cause access problems. --- Steve

Yes, I am trying to import a security template in the manner you
describe. The issue is that when I do so I get the error message
mentioned in my previous message, namely:

"Windows cannot import invalid template %template%"

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Josh

Hmm. If you are trying to import it into a Windows 2003 Server I am not sure
what the problem is offhand. You might want to try using the Security
Configuration and Analysis mmc snapin [ see link below] to use the template
for first and analysis and then possibly configuration to see if it works
that way. Secedit can also be used to configure a computer with a security
template. If none of that works there is some sort of problem with the
template. --- Steve
