Discussion:
Can't find GPO setting where it should be
(too old to reply)

I have the following setting set when I use the GPMC to view one of my group
policies

Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Btn_Media set
to 2

I don't have a need to have that set anymore, but when I go to Windows
Components\Internet Explorer\Toolbars, I do not see where I can set that back
to not configured.

Any ideas?

Is that key found under the "Extra Registry Settings" in GPMC? Where do
you actually see that registry key? Can you check with RSOP which policy
it is, the key gets set?

Cheers,

Exactly. It's under the "Extra Registry Settings" when GPMC runs the
settings report on it.

Not sure what you mean by where do I see the registry key, I just see it in
the GPMC Settings tab for this GPO where it says
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Btn_Media is set
to 2.

Okay - can you recall whether you have set that once with a custom ADM
template file? Can you re-import that ADM template file so that you can
set that setting to "not configured"? If not, you'll have to create a
new custom ADM template, import it and set the setting then to "Not
Configured".

Cheers,

The person who setup this GPO is no longer with us, and I wasn't with this
place when he set it up either, so I'm between a rock and a hard place. The
previous guy didn't share any info with anyone on what he did.

Hi,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you would like to disable
a policy setting. If I have misunderstood the problem, please don't
hesitate to let me know.

Based on the article below:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc778619(WS.10).aspx

[Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Toolbars\Configure Toolbar Buttons]
control the Registry Key Btn_Media. Please run rsop.msc on client to find
out the GPO which was configured with Configure Toolbar Buttons.

On client, click Start, click Run, type "rsop.msc", and navigate to:

[User Configuration\Administrative Template\Windows Components\Internet
Explorer\Toolbars\Configure Toolbar Buttons]

You would find the GPO Name in the right-panel.

On DC, open GPMC, find the GPO and change Configure Toolbar Buttons to Not
Configured.

If the issue persists, on DC, open GPMC, right-click Group Policy Results,
choose Group Policy Results Wizard, follow the wizard to collect a Group
Policy result for problematic client and user. You may need to disable
Vista Firewall temporarily to collect information. After collecting, please
use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the
file and then give me the download address.

when I have the GPMC show the settings on the Settings tab.

Hi,

Thank you for update.

Could you please upload a copy of the GPMC Group Policy Report to SkyDrive
for research? Also, run the following command on client machine: "gpresult
/z >>c:\gp.txt". Upload c:\gp.txt to SkyDrive too.

You can use Mervyn's suggestions as a guideline for 2007, too.

I think he suggested somewhere, and I agree with, that I probably just need a
custom .adm file that i can import and to undo the
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Btn_Media which
is set to 2. Does anyone know how to make one of those?

Custom ADM? One exists for Outlook 2007. I'm not sure what you mean.

Also, this appears to be related to your other thread? Otherwise, I
apologize, I'm starting to get confused on which thread is which?

Sorry for the two threads. In this one i was asking about the

Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Btn_Media set
to 2

My outlook problem was resolved by having someone with access to a DC edit
the policy. not sure why i couldn't do it, but at least its resolved.

Ok. It seems that you may need local rights on the DC to update the actual ADM file. I remember going through something similar to this at a previous client I didn';t have AD access to.

Yeah, I'm just going to see if they can go in and unconfigure this one too.
