Hello JF,

Use GPMC from the RSAT tools and configure the GPO from the Windows 7 machine.
If you also install Client side extensions on Windows XP or Windows server
2003 and Windows Vista you can also benefit form Group policy prefences on
them.

Open Control Panel, Programs and features, Turn windows features on or off,
check the tools you need under "Remote Server Administration Tools", in your
case Group policy management console.

Oh you mean the GP settings you can configure? Compared between gpedit
and gpmc? There are a couple of settings that can only be deployed in
domains, like Software Installation. That is default behavior.

Hello JF,

You found the settings that are coming new with Windows 7 or Windows server
20008 R2. So this one must be configured from a Windows 7 or Windows server
2008 R2 machine.

See here for the new ones:

Hello JF,

Did you upgrade the schema on the 2003 DCs for Windows server 2008 R2, to
have th latest available GPO options? If you do this the new GPO options
are available, without installing a Windows server 2008 R2 BUT must be configured
from Wndows 7 or Windows server 2008 R2 machines.

3rd "-" in the list, keep in mind to have backup of AD before doing changes.
I have never had any problems with schema upgrades, just mentioned it as
it is important to have a tested and up to date backup.

Ok but how do i open the group policy from the domain directly on my
windows 7 ?
If i open Group Policy Management on my windows 7 it connected to the
domain server wich is 2003 and i dont see the gpo... I don't have any
windows 2008 server yet...
Maybe im doing it wrong :)
Post by kj [SBS MVP]
RSAT, Vista, and Server 2008 support the new admx format group
policies and the older XP / 2003 machines don't.
Start managing group policies on the newer platforms.

I already know that but it seem like there is some gpo missing when
im editing gpo or creating one
If i compare gpo on my windows 7 workstation with the GPMC there is less gpo
Thanks for your help

Hello JF,
Use GPMC from the RSAT tools and configure the GPO from the Windows
7 machine. If you also install Client side extensions on Windows XP
or Windows server 2003 and Windows Vista you can also benefit form
Group policy prefences on them.
Open Control Panel, Programs and features, Turn windows features on
or off, check the tools you need under "Remote Server
Administration Tools", in your case Group policy management
console.

Hello JF,

There is no need to buy the software, you can use the trial versions to upgrade

JF,

You make a good point. I have been trying to find out how GPO's would be applied in our organization. I have all 2003 DC's and one 2008 R2 DC. Workstations are XP, but as we begin to migrate to Windows 7, will the GPO's created on the 2008 DC for Windows 7 be repliced to the 2003 DC's and pushed to Windows 7 clients in that site? It is going to be a while before all of my DC's are 2008.

Oh you mean the GP settings you can configure? Compared between gpedi
